Course Overview

International qualified teacher status (iQTS) is an international teaching qualification backed by the UK government, which is the equivalent of gaining qualified teacher status (QTS) in England. iQTS enables you to train to teach in the country where you live and work, with no need to travel to the UK. Those successfully awarded iQTS will automatically be awarded QTS.

You do not need to have undergone a period of formal teacher training to study for iQTS. The iQTS programme trains teachers to teach pupils aged 5 to 11, or pupils 11 to 18 in the full range of secondary school subjects taught in English schools.

When you complete the course, you’ll have the skills, experience and knowledge to become an excellent teacher.

The University of Buckingham is one of a small number of universities granted permission by the UK Government to offer the iQTS qualification. We welcome applications from candidates all around the world.

Applicants can also choose to undertake an additional PGCE alongside iQTS, which will result in the award of 60 Masters credits upon successful completion of the course at Level 7.

Course Delivery

Course Delivery

The iQTS programme is a 37-week school-based course. All applicants must be employed by a school for the duration of the course and be able to put into practice knowledge and skills gained from the course content.

Trainees will be guided through each stage of the course:

  • You will work under the guidance of a mentor (appointed by the school in which you work), who will organise lesson observations and meet with you weekly to review progress and set targets.
  • You are allocated a University of Buckingham tutor who will travel to visit you in your school in the first term (UK government travel advice allowing) and then meet with you approximately once a month online to track progress and support where necessary.
  • You will participate in regular live lectures and seminars, which are important to attend as a condition of the course. Dates of the Training Days can be provided.
  • There is a weekly programme of readings and reflective tasks to engage in.

FAQ's

What’s the difference between iQTS and PGCE?

The PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) is an academic postgraduate qualification that awards 60 master’s-level credits. These credits can often be transferred towards a related master’s degree, covering up to one-third of the programme. iQTS (International Qualified Teacher Status) is a professional teaching qualification that results in a teaching licence issued by England’s Department for Education. It’s widely recognised by international schools globally and can sometimes be converted into a local teaching licence in other countries.

Should I do the iQTS or the iQTS with PGCE?

If you take iQTS on its own, you will gain the UK teaching licence (Qualified Teacher Status), which is widely recognised in many international schools. If you choose iQTS with PGCE, you will also earn a postgraduate qualification with 60 master’s-level credits, giving you a strong academic foundation and the option to progress to a master’s degree in the future. Both routes are great options for teachers looking to start or progress their careers, but many applicants choose to study them together. The courses have overlapping content, which makes the combined route efficient and cost effective.

When can I apply?

You can apply throughout the year up to your course's individual application deadline. If your application deadline has passed, do get in touch with us as the university may be able to accommodate late applications, provided all the required documentation can be provided before the course start date. We do, however, recommend that you apply as early as possible – you can even apply before your first degree or other entry qualification has been awarded.
