It’s official! Our iQTS course is best-in-class…

You may already know about the iQTS course. If you don’t, you should!

International qualified teacher status (iQTS) courses first arrived in 2021. They are teaching qualifications backed by the UK government. It’s like gaining the equivalent of qualified teacher status (QTS) in England, but you can train wherever you live and work, with no need to travel to the UK. iQTS qualifications are built on rigorous, evidence-based methods and standards and are accepted all over the world.

The big news is…

The University of Buckingham’s International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) course was recently awarded the top grade of ‘1’ from the UK government.

Importantly, the University of Buckingham is the first institution to be inspected under the formal iQTS programme, rather than the pilot phase.
This marks a significant milestone for the iQTS framework and confirms our position among the leading iQTS providers globally.

All providers of iQTS have to undergo a four-day-long inspection, which takes into account feedback from trainees, mentors and school leaders, and includes visits to our schools abroad.

The inspection of The University of Buckingham’s iQTS course took place last November and has confirmed that it is one of the best providers of the iQTS course.

Particular areas of strength identified in the report included:

  • in-person tutor visits for all trainees early in the course;
  • strong and mutually supportive partnerships with schools and mentors;
  • the 100-hour Intensive Training and Practice model;
  • the University’s ‘forward-thinking use of technology’
  • excellent programme design, delivery and quality assurance.

In addition, the inspection team highlighted that the faculty had a clear sense of professionalism and pride and that workload, wellbeing and professional support were handled with insight and empathy.

Director of International Programmes Stephen Cook said:

“We are thrilled that the course design, hard work and dedication of the whole team has been recognised. We were proud when we were granted permission from the Department for Education to deliver this course, and now we are doubly proud that our delivery is considered so highly as a Grade ‘1’.”

The University of Buckingham offers a fully-online iQTS programme, which:

  • can be completed in less than 1 year,
  • covers primary and secondary age groups as well as the full range of subjects,
  • can be taken from anywhere in the world,
  • can be paired with a PGCE, and
  • is specifically designed for international school teachers.
